The green bonds issued by Bankinter prevent emissions equivalent to 191,000 tonnes of CO2

The assets in this green portfolio are mainly renewable energy projects, which amount to 679 million euros, of a total of 750 million.

Photovoltaic infrastructure accounts for 55% of renewables and solar thermal 32%, while wind energy represents 13% of the total.

The calculation is supported by the methodology of an independent consultant, Ecodes, specialised in this field.

With its green bonds, Bankinter prevented the equivalent of 191,097 tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2024. This figure is obtained by calculating the positive environmental impact generated by the projects financed with the green corporate debt issued by the Bank in February 2020, for a nominal value of 750 million euros. This is stated in the Annual Green Bond Report that the entity has just made public.

The assets in the portfolio of eligible green loans financed by the aforementioned issue represent 91% of the financed assets and are related to renewable energy projects, amounting to 679 million euros. The remaining 9% comes from financing green buildings, i.e. 71 million. Most of the projects are located in the European Union.

In the renewable energy projects, which amount to 679 million euros, photovoltaic energy projects dominate, amounting to 370 million euros, of which 323 million euros correspond to infrastructures that are already up and running and the remainder to projects under construction. Solar thermal power plants account for 32% and total 219 million euros. Meanwhile, wind energy projects represent 13% of the total, amounting to 90 million euros.

These savings in emissions were calculated on the basis of generating 1,818.43 GWh of wind, photovoltaic and solar thermal energy through the renewable assets in which the bonds invest. It has also contributed to reducing energy use by 618 MWh/year as a result of financing green and efficient buildings.

The estimate is based on a methodology that has been developed, as in previous years, by an independent advisor, Ecodes, which guarantees the use of objective, rigorous and comparable sources, as well as impartiality. Deloitte has acted as an independent verifier.

For Bankinter, these bonds are part of the environmental dimension of its Sustainability Plan 2024-2026, called ADN, which is based on the following pillars: Responsible action, Differentiation and Sustainable business (ADN after the Spanish initials).

In recognition of its strong performance in terms of sustainability, Bankinter has been included for the seventh consecutive year in the list of companies listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) worldwide. The Bank also gained recognition in 2024 from other sustainability indices and rating agencies, including the MSCI ESG, Sustainalytics, Bloomberg GEI and FTSE4Good.
