Bankinter avoids emissions equivalent to 217,500 tonnes of CO2 thanks to its green bonds

The calculation of emission savings is based on the generation of 1,987.54 GWh from renewable energy and an annual reduction of 440 MWh achieved by green buildings.

The independent firm ECODES, which specialises in the green economy, calculated the emissions savings and developed the methodology for the report, which has been verified by Deloitte.

Summary generated with artificial intelligence:

Bankinter avoided emissions of 217,569 tonnes of CO2 during 2025 thanks to projects financed with 750 million euros in corporate green bonds issued in February 2020, of which 90% was allocated to renewable energy and 10% to green buildings, mainly in the European Union.

In 2025, Bankinter avoided emissions equivalent to a total of 217,569 tonnes of CO2, according to the calculation of the positive environmental impact associated with the projects financed by the green corporate debt that the Bank issued in February 2020, with a nominal value of 750 million euros. This figure appears in the Annual Green Bond Report published by the Bank.

Of the assets in the portfolio of eligible green loans financed by this issue, 90% correspond to renewable energy projects, amounting to a total of 676 million euros. Meanwhile, the remaining 10% comes from the financing of green buildings, amounting to a total of 74 million euros. Most of the projects are located in the European Union.

Among these renewable energy projects, photovoltaic energy comprises the largest share, with 320 million euros, representing 47% of the total. This is followed by solar thermal projects, which account for 39% and amount to 266 million euros. Wind energy comprises 13%, at 90 million euros.

Emissions savings have been calculated based on the generation of 1,987.54 GWh of wind, photovoltaic and solar thermal energy corresponding to these bonds' renewable assets. The financing of green and efficient buildings has also contributed to reducing energy use by 440 MWh/year.

The estimate, as in previous years, is based on a methodology developed by an independent advisor, ECODES, which guarantees the use of objective, rigorous and comparable sources, as well as the impartiality of the approach. Deloitte acted as independent verifier.

Recent issue of green bonds

A few weeks ago, Bankinter successfully carried out its second green bond issue, the calculation of which is not included in the impact report detailed in this press release. Specifically, the Bank issued senior non-preferred green bonds with an eight-year maturity totalling 750 million euros, with an option to redeem in the seventh year, an issue aimed at institutional investors. It was oversubscribed by a factor of 3.2, allowing the Bank to price the issue at a more favourable level of midswap +95 basis points. Bankinter launches a senior non-preferred green bond issue for an amount of 750 million euros

Transversal sustainability

This reduction in emissions forms part of the sustainability strategy that the Bank has been driving for decades and which is currently being implemented throughout the organisation via the 2024-2026 Sustainability Plan. The plan is called the “DNA Plan”, (ADN in Spanish) for the initials of its main pillars:

  • A for responsible Action: Ethical management and reduction of the Bank’s environmental footprint, promoting inclusion, employee wellbeing and good corporate governance.
  • Differentiation: Promoting innovation, quality of service and compliance with European regulations (CSRD).
  • N for sustainable Business (Negocio in Spanish): Commitment to financing green and social projects, aligning its activity with the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is this last point that includes measures to reduce CO2 emissions.
