Bankinter signs the Finance for Diversity Pledge

Bankinter is one of 26 financial institutions from around the globe, and the only Spanish one, that have launched the pledge.

Bankinter has signed the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge, one of 26 financial institutions from around the globe that presented the manifesto during the Nature for Life Huborganised by the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme and the Convention on Biological Diversity. The pledge was also presented at the Biodiversity Summit of the United Nations General Assembly on 30 September.

The signatories commit to pursuing their business in a manner compatible with the conservation of biodiversity, invite other institutions to join and call upon world leaders to reverse nature loss this decade. In addition, they will collaborate and share knowledge about including biodiversity in sustainability policies, assessing the impacts of financial activity on biodiversity, and setting targets to mitigate these impacts.

Pedro Guerrero, chairman of Bankinter, said: "Sustainability is integral to Bankinter's business strategy, and joining international initiatives that seek to make a positive contribution to society and the environment is one of the bank's objectives."

Signing the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge represents a new step forward in the bank's sustainability strategy and demonstrates Bankinter's firm commitment, as a financial institution, to contribute to the protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems through our financing activities and investments.

The Finance for Diversity Pledge has been launched by a group of financial institutions that have been working actively as members of the Finance and Biodiversity Community, a workstream of the European Commission. In addition to Bankinter, the signatories include the following: ACTIAM, Aegon Nederland, Allianz France, ASN Bank, ASR Nederland, AXA Group, Caisse de Dépôts, HBSC Global Asset Management, Karner Blue Capital, New Forests Pty Ltd, Piraeus Bank S.A, Robeco, Triple Jump, Triodos Bank and Volksbank.

Joining this pledge reinforces Bankinter's sustainability strategy by taking it one step closer to meeting the challenges and international targets set to fight climate change and protect biodiversity.

It also builds on the work begun two years ago when Bankinter contributed to the creation of the Finance Sector Supplement to the Natural Capital Protocol, a practical guide to help financial institutions develop their own metrics and system for quantifying their natural capital risks and impacts.
