Bankinter Investment consolidates its investment banking operations, strengthening its alternative investment, advisory and structured financing businesses

Bankinter Investment, the Bank's subsidiary dedicated to Investment Banking, closed 2022 with a portfolio of 4 billion euros in financing, intended to finance projects in different sectors and strategic economic activities, in Spain and Portugal. In 2022 alone, new business in Structured Financing amounted to 1.080 billion euros.

 

Within this 4 billion investment portfolio, Energy and Infrastructure has a special role, at 1.527 billion euros, including the financing of renewable energy projects, water and waste management, port activities, logistics and transport, the health sector and hospitals.

 

And 1.189 billion have been invested in corporate, to meet the operational needs of companies.

 

A total of 903 million euros were applied to mortgageable assets, which may be built, being renovated or under construction: offices, hotels, ships, planes and rolling stock.

 

And finally, 274 million euros in acquisitions and expansion plans for companies, business units and assets. Both for financial and industrial investors or family-owned groups, implementing structures that generally include a vehicle company (SPV) whose shares are taken, inter alia, as financing guarantee. 

 

Corporate advisory service.

 

Bankinter Investment's lines of action also include a comprehensive corporate advisory service, for mergers and acquisitions, capital markets (issuances, IPOs, capital increases etc.) or advice on real estate divestments.

 

In 2022, Bankinter Investment's team, which provides corporate advice to mid-market family-owned companies in Spain and Portugal, has led more than 25 relevant corporate deals nationally and internationally, in the three aforementioned areas of action.

 

Bankinter Investment offers wide-ranging advice, but it stands out for the knowledge it provides to entrepreneurs and managers in buying and selling companies or real estate portfolios, investor search, capital/private debt and issuances in capital markets, and a personalised service for venture capital funds.

 

The most significant transactions led exclusively by Bankinter Investment include:

- Coordination, structuring and placement of the private capital increase of 24 million euros of Umbrella Solar and the IPO of the company to BME Growth.

- Coordination, structuring and placement of a 52-million Grenergy Renovables green bond on the MARF alternative fixed income market.

- Advice on the sale of shares (up to 100%) in 4 mid-market companies to venture capital funds and international operators.

- Coordination, structuring and placement of more than 10 promissory note programmes on the MARF alternative fixed income market, with the debt placed amounting to over 600 million.

- Advice on the acquisition of the Atrium Saldanha building in Lisbon for more than 200 million euros.

 

Alternative Investment.

 

As for alternative investment, Bankinter Investment closed the year with 20 investment vehicles, with a capital committed by investors of 4.210 billion euros which, including the associated financing, represents a portfolio of assets under management of more than 7 billion euros and which will approach 10 billion euros once all of the vehicles are fully invested.

 

Dividends and divestments made to investors already amount to 810 million euros, including the divestment of the first renewable investment vehicle launched in 2017 (Helia I) where investors more than doubled the value of their investment within 4.5 years. In 2022 alone, the dividend payout amounted to 125 million euros.

Investments over the last seven years have focused on sectors as diverse as renewable energies, student residences, hotels, real estate, infrastructure, technology, office buildings, retail space and venture capital.

 

At the end of 2022, this activity was relaunched with the creation of Bankinter Investment SGEIC, Bankinter Group's new alternative investment manager. And recently, the CNMV registered its first alternative investment delegated management fund with minimum entry amounts of 10,000 euros and, therefore, accessible to a much broader universe of investors, under the new regulatory framework established in Law 18/ 2022, of 28 September, for the creation and growth of companies.
