Letter from the Chair
María Dolores Dancausa. Chair of Bankinter
"We have demonstrated that a different way of doing banking is not only possible, but a clear competitive advantage: a banking system that is approachable, profitable, innovative and responsible".
Dear shareholders,
In this particularly significant year, in which we have celebrated our 60th anniversary, it is an honour to address you as Chair of Bankinter. It is an occasion that invites us to look back with gratitude and to continue moving forward with determination, ambition and a sense of responsibility. With that in mind, I am pleased to share with you the main progress, challenges and results that have marked this year.
From a general standpoint, 2025 has been a demanding year, conditioned by the progressive normalisation of interest rates in the euro area, episodes of volatility in the markets and a complex geopolitical environment that affected both companies and households. Despite these circumstances, we once again demonstrated that a different way of doing banking is not only possible, but a real competitive advantage: a bank that is approachable, solvent, innovative and responsible. A bank that listens, adapts and, above all, thinks about people.
In terms of performance, 2025 was a sound year, in which we made significant progress that has reinforced our trajectory. As our Chief Executive Officer describes in her interview, and as you can see in the pages of this report, Bankinter obtained over 1,000 million euros in net profit for the first time, with a return on equity of close to 19% and exceptional solvency indicators, including a CET1 capital ratio that stood well above regulatory requirements. This was complemented by growth in our customer base, gains across all balance sheet items, the consolidation of our position in the markets in which we operate – Spain, Portugal and Ireland – and a robust structure that enables us to continue creating value in a sustainable and profitable manner.
But beyond the figures, I would like to focus on the "how": on the way we continue to set ourselves apart in an increasingly competitive environment. We have achieved this through the successful integration of our digital bank EVO Banco, which has boosted our innovation capabilities and is driving all our businesses forward. In 2025, as in other years, all of this resulted in outstanding strength, placing us once again among the most resilient entities in Europe, as the stress tests performed in the year demonstrate.
Our strength lies in our different mindset, in innovating and understanding financial resources and capabilities as levers to create value and build the future.
For our customers, this means expert support, a comprehensive value proposition and solutions designed to meet all their financial needs: from managing savings or planning investments to financing personal, family or business projects. Our commitment is to be close at hand, to provide advice with rigour and transparency and offer solutions that inspire confidence for every type of customer at all stages of their lives.
"Our anniversary is also a recognition of the effort, commitment and adaptability of the great team at Bankinter".
For our shareholders and investors, value creation means maintaining a clear, prudent strategy that combines profitability and sustainability. This close alignment with our shareholders and investors leads to a disciplined execution of our corporate strategy. We manage capital with rigour and a long-term vision. Profitability is not an isolated goal, but the result of responsible risk management, good geographical and business diversification and a careful selection of the projects we invest in. The trust that is placed in us is reflected in a balanced dividend policy that is consistent with the strength of our balance sheet and our growth opportunities. In line with our historical commitment to sustainable remuneration, in 2025 we paid out 57 euro cents per share, gross (of which, 45 euro cents was an interim dividend for 2025), with a total disbursement 516 million euros, equivalent to a payout of 50%.
Adding value to our workforce means providing an environment where talent can develop and where there are real opportunities for personal and professional growth. Our success is based on the professionalism, ethics and dedication of the people who form part of Bankinter in all the countries in which we operate. Thanks to them, we are making progress in incorporating new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, improving processes, strengthening our relationships with customers and fulfilling the commitments we have made to the market. This 60th anniversary is also a recognition of their effort, commitment and ability to adapt.
For society, value creation involves listening, staying a step ahead of challenges and acting consistently. Bankinter has successfully evolved to respond to changes in our environment: supporting the business sector, promoting financial inclusion and reinforcing our commitment to sustainability. This commitment is articulated in the Sustainability Plan 2024-2026, approved by the Board of Directors and aligned with the bank's Sustainability Policy. The Plan is structured around three pillars – responsible action, differentiation and sustainable business – that guide responsible business management, from strengthening corporate governance, ethics and transparency to customer relations, talent management, sustainable innovation, climate action, cybersecurity and fostering sustainable finance.
The Bankinter Innovation Foundation plays a fundamental role in this area. Through programmes such as Akademia Future Builders, the Future Trends Forum and initiatives to support entrepreneurship, the Foundation promotes reflection and knowledge generation, the identification of future trends that will influence business models, the development of young talent and innovation as a driver of economic and social progress. Work that reflects the Group's commitment to making a positive impact which extends beyond financial results.
As a result of this comprehensive approach, we are recognised as one of the most sustainable companies in the world by Spanish and international indices and institutions. We are proud of this recognition, which reflects our progress in mainstreaming environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria in all our decisions.
In short, these 60 years of history, which have culminated in an exceptional year, have taught us that true strength lies in evolving without losing our essence. Bankinter has been, and will continue to be, a different kind of bank: independent, innovative and committed to sustainability and long-term value creation.
Today, with the experience we have acquired and with our ambition undiminished, we look to the future with confidence, ready to continue transforming banking with solutions that anticipate the needs of our customers and contribute to the progress of society.
Thank you for joining us on this journey; together we will continue to build a solid, responsible project that is prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
