Territorial
Organisation
of West Madrid
Origins and history
The West Madrid Territorial Organisation emerged as a result of the development of a single Madrid Organisation which, as Bankinter consolidated its specialised and close-to-customer banking model, made it necessary to divide its territorial structure. This separation enabled management optimisation, balanced the weight of the business, and gave the network greater capacity to respond to customers.
Since its origins, West Madrid has been a strategic axis within the Bank, both due to its volume of activity and the diversity and relevance of its customer base. Its development has been linked to the consolidation of a model based on specialisation, service quality, and deep knowledge of the local environment.
The creation of this territorial unit was driven by key factors such as the Bank’s sustained growth, the need to bring decision-making closer to the customer, and the desirability of avoiding excessive business concentration in a single organisation, while at the same time fostering greater competitiveness among territorial units.
In this initial stage, notable figures include Ramón Doval and, in particular, Juan Villasante, who played a pivotal role in consolidating and developing the Organisation throughout its various stages.
The Organisation is currently led by Joaquín Calvo-Sotelo, who has held the position since 2026.
Evolution
and changes
Over time, West Madrid has evolved from a more centralised model towards a highly specialised and segmented structure, adapting to changes in the environment and the development of new businesses within the Bank.
Organisation Managers
One of the most significant changes has been the change of the business model towards greater specialisation, especially in Private Banking, Corporate & SME Banking and Large-corporate Banking. The creation of the commercial department for Corporates in 2015 marked a turning point, integrating the former SME centres and strengthening this segment as one of the pillars of the Organisation.
Featured milestones
The Organisation has stood out for its ability for agile adaptation to market changes, as well as its ability to identify opportunities, and stay ahead of its competitors in the development of new business.
Current
strengths
The main strengths of West Madrid are based on the quality of its teams, its high level of specialisation, and its positioning in key business segments.
One of its main assets is its team, made up of highly qualified professionals with a strong customer orientation and a culture based on high standards and quality of service. This combination has allowed us to consolidate a solid and high-value customer base, especially in the Wealth Management and corporate segments.
The Organisation is particularly relevant in its leadership in Wealth Management, where it holds a prominent position within the Bank, as well as by its standing in the agency network, in which it is clearly a leading example.
Moreover, coordination between branches, specialised centres, and the agency network represents one of the Organisation’s distinguishing features, facilitating the generation of synergies and providing comprehensive customer service.
