Territorial
Organisation
of the Canary Islands
Origins and history
The Territorial Organisation of the Canary Islands came to be when the first branch office opened in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in March 1974.
Subsequently, in 1979, Bankinter opened its first branch office in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, although initially it did not constitute a formal territorial organisation.
Over time, more branches were added in both provinces:
Gran Canaria: 5 branch offices in the capital, as well as in Telde, Vecindario and San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Other islands: Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Tenerife: 3 branches offices in the capital, 1 in the south and 2 in the north (San Cristóbal de La Laguna and Puerto de la Cruz). In 1998, the two provincial organisations (Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife) were unified to form the Canary Islands Organisation, covering both provinces.
Reason for creation: to address business needs, promote growth, and manage shares in strategic companies. Innovations such as the Agency Network, Virtual Banking and Telephone Banking (1992) marked a milestone by introducing the concept of remote banking, differentiating Bankinter in the market.
The Organisation is currently led by Laura García, who has held the position since 2022.
